Yesterday I spent most of my "free" day sans CJ digging in the dirt.... Well, I think "dirt" may not be quite the right term-- more like "water-logged, back-breaking, how-in-the-world-it-sustains-any-life clay". The fun thing, though, was I got to make friends with a few of my bird neighbors. Funny how it may be easiest to make new friends through their stomachs.... A pair of robins kept me entertained by frequenting my new "fast food drive-thru" excavation, ridding it of any unearthed grubs and worms.....
The unfortunate thing I've discovered, though, is there are a few TV cables that run straight through the bed..... something I realized after I had sliced through a bit of our own TV cable insulation with the shovel... Oh, well, I've found another use for "duct tape"! But I decided to be a little more careful the rest of the day... knowing how many placating dinners I'd have to cook for the neighbors if I sliced through THEIR cable line....
After hours earth-moving, I've also come to the conclusion my bed might be a little ambitious.... But I did make progress.... probably an area of 7 feet by 4 feet.... which is only about half of the size of the flower bed I intended to make..... I'll keep on (carefully) digging, though.... as soon as the latest weather front moves through.... and resaturates the clay for me!

Steph-
Have you thought about having your new bed flow into the area surrounding the pond? It would be nice - you could have a little walking path through it (aka not so much digging).
Just a thought!

That's the ultimate plan! We hate to have to funnel the mower back there to cut the little bit of grass that actually grows among the maple tree roots in the summer..... Not sure if I'll get it all done this year, though!
Ouch on that cable. Be careful - you know how people can be about their tv...Nice work so far!!
Yeah..... I got pretty nervous for a second when I saw the "cut" in the insulation..... Last year we planted a small "goat willow" (salix) shrub behind the pond.... and we sliced thru our cable line..... for a couple of days we had no cable.... or internet..... or phone..... but at least it was ours and not someone elses.....
I meant to mention - those irises are gorgeous! I love irises...such a pretty vibrant color.
I love irises, too... must be the LA/New Orleans girls in us.... I think it's funny to see Mr. Barkley and all of his pretty "groupies"....
